When a referee letter fights your CV

Referee letters are drafted from memory and kindness. CVs are drafted from calendars. The mismatch shows up in month spans, job titles, and the size of a project. In a consistency review we line the letter beside the CV and mark every noun that does not agree.

The hardest cases are compliments that invent scope. A referee may praise “leading a team of twelve” when your CV lists a pair of interns. Committees notice. Softening the letter — or correcting the CV if the letter is right — is your work; our brief only names the clash.

Ask referees for a final glance at your dated CV before they seal the letter. It is a small courtesy that prevents the most common contradiction we see in Japanese and English packets alike.
